Wrapping up the regatta season

Filed under: Canada, Kayak — K2 in Canada @ 10:13 PM

This past weekend was the last sprint regatta of the season. Pacific Cup in Maple Ridge . Team came from near and far – as far as Alberta. And the weather was actually quite okay – sun and clouds on Saturday and cloudy Sunday. But no wind and temperatures above average. Every other year we usually wrap ourselves into fleece blankets between races – this year I was in T-shirt most of the time.

Racing was fun. All in all we had 20 BCKC members out over the 2 days of racing. Got lots of team boats in. We actually had 4 women out to race both days for K4’s and K2’s (borrowing Ashley from Nanaimo – 4 month pregnant – on Saturday) and joined forces with the guys for some mixed K4. And compared to the spring regatta we actually had War Canoe races on the schedule this time. Good competition as well – battling against teams from Ridge (full of HP athletes) as well as False Creek (full of dragon boaters). Personally, I was off my game this weekend but that was okay. My balance is improving again and I have all winter to train and hope the rattling in my lungs after a big effort will go away.

Our guys did well even though they had to race against 2 time gold medalist Greg Barton. Okay Barton is now over 50 years old but still competes successfully – more often in surfski than K1 and mostly long distance (>20km) rather than sprint (500 & 200m). Nevertheless, he still has the edge over our younger masters Dari and Steve. But that will change by next year, says Dari.
