Roadtrip – breaking in the new car

Filed under: Canada, Fishing — K2 in Canada @ 10:46 PM

First fishing trip for the year – a one day trip up to Logan Lake and back, ~600km return – perfect to test out the new car on the highway. We picked Leighton Lake because a) the road in is doable with a car and b) most of the other lakes around Merritt are at higher elevation and potentially still frozen solid. The weather forecast wasn’t the greatest but in the Merritt area you can get lucky and the rain only comes down the next valley over. We got up early (6am) and were on the road before 7. The drive started out uneventful but that was soon to change. As we headed into the mountains on the Coquihalla HWY it started to lightly snow – by the time we hit the summit we were in whiteout conditions. Naturally we didn’t get winter tires yet for the Golf, we bought it in the spring. Luckily not much of the snow stuck to the road and by the time we got to Merritt the snow turned into rain and then even dried up completely. But that wasn’t the end of it. We were driving along the road between Merritt and Logan Lake – another HWY – when we saw those big rocks lying on the road. In good old fishing trip fashion we just steered the car so that we would drive right over them. Ooops – the car is “slightly” lower than our truck mind you and however it happen but a big bang-crash-thump later we had a flat tire. Not just a flat tire but a big dent in the rim as well. At least the underside of the car was undamaged and too our surprise the Golf actually had a full size spare. Last but not least, the sun was shining down on us while we were swearing and changing the tire. There was a reason why I never wanted to buy a new car – but now it’s broken in and we can relax driving it 🙂

We did make it to the lake without any further incident – the road is now paved all the way. Fishing wasn’t great but the weather wasn’t too terrible either. A bit windy to start but it calmed down in the afternoon. Not much rain at all and a little bit if sunshine. Jeff caught a few small trout, I hooked into a couple but couldn’t land any.

Good wildlife viewing while driving too – a coyote between Langley and Abbortsford, a bunch of deer between Merritt and Logan Lake (before the rock), a few marmots at Leighton Lake and 3.5 bears (3 adults, one cub) on the drive home along the Coquihalla Hwy. The drive home was fine – no snow, no rocks and manageable traffic near the end. All in all a great weekend – except my back still hurts.

  2. Nice groundhog! Does that mean spring can start?
