Jul 23 – Howe Sound Downwind Race

Filed under: Canada, Kayak — K2 in Canada @ 6:27 PM

Finally a nice sunny weekend and we were heading to Porteau Cove, the start of the Howe Sound Downwind Race. Well it’s called a downwind race because it goes from Porteau all the way to Squamish (~15km) and usually the summer inflow winds produce a nice following sea. Well when we arrived at Porteau it was still relatively calm. Which fits Jodi and I just fine since neither of us is good a riding waves and we were in a double together. Jeff was in his in my single ski but he wasn’t “racing” – just out for a paddle and take picture. He still beat us, argh!! But only because when we finally hit the water at 1:30PM after a 30min delay, the wind finally decided to kick up a bit producing nice waves, easy to ride with a single (especially my Legend) but not so ideal for the double – at least that’s the story I stick to!! Nevertheless, Jodi and I had a really good race. We were solid the whole way and it felt good even with the waves. We came in 5th overall I think – no make that 4th since Jeff didn’t count. And he did some video of us for the first 30+ minutes – below just a “short” version of it showing of the back of the Burnaby racing shirts 🙂

Afterwards we headed to Jodi’s place for dinners – actually Brad picked us up in Squamish as Jeff and I left our car in Porteau avaoiding the shuttle to Squamish which caused the late start as people got stuck in traffic. This new sea to sky highway sees a LOT of accidents. It was a fun evening with great company and good food – even though I will never get used to ginger and cayenne pepper in a pineapple-organe-mango smoothie.
