Temperature Inversion Nov 23-24

Filed under: Canada, Ski, Travel — K2 in Canada @ 8:36 PM

Last weekend already we were hoping we would be skiing at Cypress… Instead we did another trip to the Okanagan. But this time we went closer to the south end – Nickelplate had opened. I left work early on Friday and we drove Hwy 3 to Princeton that night. John G was with us for this trip. We had dinner at the Irish Pub right at the entrance of town – food was good but the sign up front was the most note-worthy. It got cold that night.

We woke up to -8C the next morning and a mix of sun and clouds. The drive up from Princeton to Nickelplate was still over an hour. Interestingly though the temperature got warmer as we started to go up into the mountains and we arrived at Nickelplate to brilliant sunshine and just below zero degrees. The snow was still cold though and skiing was nice. It warmed up to +5C that day!!! Skiing Saturday felt even harder than 2 weeks ago. Still, we got 2.5hrs of classic in and I did another hour of skate afterwards. I saw moose tracks and some cat tracks on the trails…but no animals sightings other than squirrel. The sun was pretty low in the sky by the time we finished.

We spent the evening at our good friends Keith and Mary in Peachland. It was a really fun evening and as usual I had way too much to eat and drink. Those two always spoil us. Surprisingly though, no headache the next morning. After a leisure breakfast of homemade waffles and bacon we went back up to the ski hill for another round. This time we started at 0C in town, hit about -3C half way up and then the temperature went up again to +1C by the time we hit the Nordic Centre at over 1400m elevation – all within an hours drive. Sun was out again and we put in another 2+hrs on classics and 1+hrs on skates. I felt a bit stronger the 2nd day.
