1st Canadian Surfski Championship – Aug 23

Filed under: Canada, Kayak — K2 in Canada @ 10:32 PM

And Jeff and I were not racing – we were volunteering in the boat staging area. Since I am not at all comfortable in waves this year there was no way I’d be racing my single. And Jeff wasn’t up for racing the double. But we were there!! And we paddled the course taking pictures of the competitors out on the water. It was actually quite nice to get all the vibe of a race day without the anxiety of having to perform!

The course went from Porteau Cove to Squamish in anticipation of a big inflow wind in the afternoon. Well the wind didn’t fully cooperate but it was a beautiful sunny day. The field was stacked – some of the most known names of the international surfski scene showed up that day: Sean Rice – raining World Champ from South Africa and his brother Kenny; Clint Robinson from Australia; Oscar Chalupsky from South Africa; Hank Mcgregor from South Africa; Jasper Mocke from South Africa and Michelle Eray also South Africa. And I think they all enjoyed it despite the lack of big wind. Comments like the most stunning scenery to race in were heard :-).  Bob Putnam of Deep Cove Outdoors, Stu Shearer and Ian Low put on an awesome event!! Congrats to all the competitors! For all my pictures go to this link. There are plenty more on facebook. For a selection see below.
