A day at English Bay

Filed under: Animals, Canada, Kayak — K2 in Canada @ 4:20 PM

Another sunny Saturday even thought the forecast was for rain – we are getting so spoiled!!! We took the double surfski out that day to find some waves out in English Bay. I am not ready yet to take my single out there. Winds were south westerly and not really ideal for waves but some good swell was coming in off the Georgia Straight. It was hard work keeping up with Jeff’s fast stroke rate when catching waves and I forgot all about to worry about balance :-). Since we launched from Jericho and went straight west we missed all of the oil spill crap that had happened this week in the bay. A freighter had been loosing some 2800l of fuel. Unfortunately it took 13hrs until our government reacted and did anything about it and some of the beaches along Stanley Park got affected. I wonder what would happen if we had a real oil spill in the harbour. Or even worse if a real oil spill would happen up north where our federal government just approved the build of a new oil tanker terminal at the end of a pipeline coming from Alberta going through the most remote regions of our beautiful province (Enbridge Northern Gateway) despite the people living in BC trying to rally against it. What will hit us first – a man-made disaster in the form of a major oil spill or the anticipated super earthquake?

Enough of the gloomy thoughts. We did enjoy a nice lunch out on the patio of The Galley at the Jericho Sailing Centre overlooking beautiful English Bay after our paddle. Definitely the best view of the city from up there :-). And more pictures pf my friend the “Fence” hummingbird.
