This is gonna hurt

Round Bowen Race Saturday Jun 25th. We have done this race a few times in the past. It was never an easy race being 32km long and conditions that can vary so much. Winds and currents and temperatures. But this year felt much harder than I remembered. Maybe because we are older or maybe because we didn’t train for it. I am going with the latter. I sure was glad Jeff agreed to do it in the double. He did a great repair job on the boat as well after we busted the rudder the previous weekend.

Condition for Bowen were fairly calm with an outgoing tide. Usually one can play the currents in these conditions by either hugging the shore or staying off it. That used to be our strength. This year though we could not find the fast water. We were supposedly paddling against the current after Cape Roger Curtis but had to stay off shore to find some mildly faster water. Really weird. The weather was a bit on the cooler side, 15C, and it was overcast for most of the race – again should have been ideal conditions for us. So it was a long slog. We completely fell apart on the last 5km doing 8-9km/h supposedly going with the current. Okay, there was some headwind but not enough that it should cause us to go below 10km/hr – training or no training. Took us ~10min longer than our usual times from the past. But we finished where we thought we would. The double category was stacked this year and we were 4th double, 8th overall out of about 60 boats. Nothing to brag about. Full results here. Unfortunately we missed out on the pie prizes – should have tried harder I guess.

But all the pain was washed away with a few beers (too many) and the always fantastic salmon BBQ after the race. The sun came out for the BBQ as well and it was a great afternoon to hang around with our paddling friends. Since we had left our car in Horseshoe Bay there was no rush to get into the ferry line up. We were some of the last people to leave. Thanks to Bowen Island Kayaking for putting on this event year after year. Takes a lot of dedicated volunteers.

Sunday was warm and sunny and we decided to do a recovery hike. We picked the Howe sound Crest trail from Cypress to Unnecessary Mountain. The starting point is higher up so the elevation gain is only just over 600m but it does go up and down a lot. And it’s about 18km return. About 4.5hrs plus 30min rest at the top. The trail was quite muddy in sections and there was quite a bit more snow still on top than in the last couple year. We are actually experiencing a normal early summer. The views from up there are some of the best!

On the drive home we stopped in at the Cypress lookout. It was a surprisingly clear day and worth taking a couple pictures of our beautiful city.

We had an early supper at the Two Lions Pub in West Van enjoying some well deserved pints of Guinness. What an awesome weekend staying in town!
